Dr. Susan M. Kleiner is the foremost nutrition authority on eating for strength, and her POWER EATING program has reshaped the lives of thousands. Dr. Kleiner is the president and owner of HIGH PERFORMANCE NUTRITION, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in media communications, industry consulting, and personal counseling, on Mercer Island, Washington.
Author and nutritional consultant
Dr. Kleiner is the author of POWER EATING, Third Edition (Human Kinetics, 2007), rated as Muscle & Fitness Magazine's #1 Diet Book of the Year (1999), and the only diet book in Shape Magazine's "5 Great Books for Your Fitness Library" (May 2001). She has also authored The Good Mood Diet (Springboard Press, 2007), The PowerFood Nutrition Plan (Rodale, 2006), High-Performance Nutrition: The Total Eating Plan to Maximize Your Workout (John Wiley & Sons, 1996), The POWER EATING AND FITNESS LOG (Get Pumped, 1999), The Be Healthier Feel Stronger Vegetarian Cookbook (Macmillan, 1997), and The High Performance Cookbook (Macmillan, 1995). Dr. Kleiner is the nutrition consultant to The Seattle Sonics and the Miami Heat, and she was the lead nutritionist in the development of the GymAmerica.com site. She was the media spokesperson for the Brita Company for a decade, and an advisory board member for Allrecipes.com. Dr. Kleiner has consulted with many other food and beverage companies and has been the nutrition consultant to the Seattle Seahawks, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Cavaliers, The Repertory Project Dance Company, The Seattle Skating Club, Olympians and athletes at all levels of sport. She was a founding member of the Gatorade Sports Nutrition Speakers Network and a former Educational Advisory Board member of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute.
Dr. Kleiner is a national columnist and speaker on the subject of nutrition, sports, and fitness. She is the sports nutrition Q&A columnist for Oxygen and Clean Eating magazines, and a regular feature writer and columnist for the Fitness Rx magazines. She is an advisory board member for Shape, Let's Live, and Physical magazines. Other publications include The Physician & Sportsmedicine, Training & Conditioning, Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Shape, Shape Cooks, Healthline, IDEA Today, Female Bodybuilding, Bodybuilding Lifestyles, Swimming Technique, Executive Health's Good Health Report, chapters in medical textbooks, and professional research articles. Dr. Kleiner has twice contributed to the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Education and awards
Dr. Kleiner earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hiram College (1979), a Master of Science in Nutrition (1982) and Doctor of Philosophy in Nutrition (1987) from the Department of Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In 1982 she became a Registered Dietitian of the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and in 1992 she was one of the first Certified Nutrition Specialists recognized by the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists.
Her research has focused on sports and cardiovascular nutrition, with a special concentration on the nutritional requirements of strength training and muscle building. She received a Young Investigator Award from the American College of Nutrition for her doctoral research on the cardiovascular disease risks of diet and anabolic steroid use in competitive male bodybuilders.
After completing her doctorate, Dr. Kleiner was appointed to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1988, she became the first faculty member appointed by Duke University Medical Center to the newly endowed Sarah W. Stedman Center for Nutritional Studies. As an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Medicine, she served as Administrative Director for the Stedman Nutrition Center from August, 1988 to August, 1990. During that time, Dr. Kleiner also became the first Director of Nutrition for Duke University's Preventive Approach to Cardiology and the Center for Living lifestyle modification program.
Dr. Kleiner was North Carolina Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year and also received the American Dietetic Association Outstanding Service Award in 1990. She is a Founder and Fellow of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Dietetic Association and its Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN) Practice Group, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Dr. Kleiner enjoys the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest where she lives with her husband and two daughters on Mercer Island, Washington.
